The indigenous people of Taiwan, all speaking languages belonging to the Austronesian language family, have been inhabiting the island for at least 5000 years. Despite the fact that today they make up less than 2.5% of the total population, they are linguistically and culturally incredibly diverse: in a relatively small geographical area, there are around twenty different ethnic groups, each with their own language and distinct culture. This course is an introduction to their history, languages, cultures, and situation in Taiwanese society. Through reading; studying representations of indigenous languages and cultures in media, art and public debate; and interacting with members of indigenous communities, it will give get a better understanding of and appreciation for the indigenous peoples of Taiwan.

This course does not require any previous theoretical knowledge. It is open to Taiwanese and exchange students. It is taught in English and Chinese on alternate years.
